The Judo Boys
Formerly top NAB and ANZ executives, Joseph Healy and David Hornery (Aka. the Judo Boys) now lead Judo Bank, considered one of the most successful of the several new banks to launch in Australia in recent years. Established in 2016, Healey is the CEO and Hornery is the non-executive director and founder, who also sits on the bank’s board.
Healy has a 35-plus-year career banker with a broad background across most aspects of banking. He started his career at Lloyds Bank in London, followed by a long stint at Citibank (mainly in London) and then at Canadian bank CIBC World Markets. He has also worked at renowned banks including ANZ and National Australia Bank (NAB), and is the author of three books: Corporate Governance and Shareholder Wealth Creation (2003), Chines Firms Going Global: Can They Succeed? (2018) and Breaking the Banks (2019).
Outside banking, David is a Non Executive Chair of Studio THI (formerly The Hornery Institute), a not for profit that contributes to the global dialogue on community formation and place making and urban change preparedness within communities.
Their extensive experience in the business world, coupled with their remarkable journey with the Judo Bank, inspired them to pen the book “Black Belt.” This book delves into the invaluable lessons learned throughout their entrepreneurial endeavours and years in business before embarking on their startup venture.
