The Judo Boys

Formerly top NAB and ANZ executives, Joseph Healy and David Hornery (Aka. the Judo Boys) now lead Judo Bank, considered one of the most successful of the several new banks to launch in Australia in recent years. Established in 2016, Healey is the CEO and Hornery is the non-executive director and founder, who also sits on the bank’s board.

Healy has a 35-plus-year career banker with a broad background across most aspects of banking. He started his career at Lloyds Bank in London, followed by a long stint at Citibank (mainly in London) and then at Canadian bank CIBC World Markets. He has also worked at renowned banks including ANZ and National Australia Bank (NAB), and is the author of three books: Corporate Governance and Shareholder Wealth Creation (2003), Chines Firms Going Global: Can They Succeed? (2018) and Breaking the Banks (2019).

Hornery is also a 35 year veteran of the banking sector, beginning in the financial markets and investment banking before moving into commercial banking. He started out in 1986 at two broking houses – GB Nathan and Potter Partners – before moving to Macquarie Bank and spending 11 years in their Financial Markets division. Hornery then went on to also work at ANZ, spending seven years as Global Head of Capital Market and four years in Singapore as CEO of ANZ Asia before moving to NAB.

Outside banking, David is a Non Executive Chair of Studio THI (formerly The Hornery Institute), a not for profit that contributes to the global dialogue on community formation and place making and urban change preparedness within communities.

Their extensive experience in the business world, coupled with their remarkable journey with the Judo Bank, inspired them to pen the book “Black Belt.” This book delves into the invaluable lessons learned throughout their entrepreneurial endeavours and years in business before embarking on their startup venture. 

Laurence Hugo

Laurence Hugo is a master in the art of negotiation with over three decades of experience in the dynamic worlds of banking and debt management. With extensive expertise, Hugo specialises in guiding both individuals and businesses through the intricate process of debt settlement. His proven track record includes helping clients secure partial or even complete debt waivers, offering them a much-needed fresh start.

Hugo has worked with major banking brands such as Citigroup, Commonwealth Bank, Deutsche Bank and Westpac, to name a few. Laurence’s impact, however, goes beyond his impressive resume. He also revolutionised the Debt Negotiation industry in 2002, pioneering this new approach which has transformed the way debt negotiations are carried out, ensuring that individuals and organisations can navigate the landscape of debt management with greater ease and effectiveness.

Paul Clitheroe

Paul Clitheroe is a founding director of leading financial planning firm ipac, and has been involved in the investment industry since he graduated from UNSW in the late 1970s. Paul has been a media commentator and conference speaker for more than 30 years, and is regarded as one of Australia’s leading experts in the field of personal investment strategies and advice. From 1993 to 2002, Paul hosted the popular Channel 9 program Money and since 1999 has been the Chairman and chief commentator of Money magazine.

He’s been an active advocate of financial literacy for DECADES and championing ASIC’s MoneySmart Schools as well as the Chairman of the Australian Government Financial Literacy Board and Financial Literacy Australia and the Chairman of InvestSMART.  He currently writes for newspapers across Australia and presents Talking Money on radio nationally.
